Overview

The passive sonar system uses three Reson brand hydrophones which pass the pinger signals through a filter/ADC stage located on stackable daughter cards. From here the ping is timed using a Microcontroller on the sonar motherboard, and the angle of the pinger relative to the submarine's heading is calculated using the time of arrival method. This heading information is the primary information used by Command and Control to follow the pinger.

The redesign of the sonar board this year allows for easy filter stage replacement, flexibility, and the abilty to recycle the sonar motherboard in future redesigns.
